What is a Phrase?
A phrase is a group of related words that:
- Does NOT have both a subject and a verb
- Does NOT express a complete idea
- Works together to give one meaning
Phrase vs. Clause:
- Phrase: No subject + verb → cannot stand alone
- “in the morning” (phrase)
- Clause: Has subject + verb → can sometimes stand alone
- “I wake up early” (clause)
Hindi understanding:
- Phrase = कुछ words का group जो एक साथ काम करते हैं
- Clause = subject + verb होता है
1. Noun Phrase
Definition:
A phrase where the main word is a noun, and it may have modifiers (adjectives, articles, etc.).
Structure:
Article/Adjective + Adjective + Noun + Prepositional Phrase

2. Verb Phrase
Definition:
A phrase where the main word is a verb, often with auxiliary/helping verbs.
Structure:
Auxiliary Verb(s) + Main Verb

- have, has (perfect tense)
- do, does (emphasis)

Definition:
A phrase that modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb and tells us how, when, where, why, or to what extent.
Types:
A) Adverb Phrase of Manner (कैसे/कैसे से)
- How something is done

Definition:

in, on, at, to, from, by, with, for, about, during, before, after, under, over, between, among, behind, inside, outside, near, above, below, through, across, along, beside, etc.

- “in the library” tells where she studies
Hindi understanding:
- Prepositional phrase = preposition से शुरू होता है
- preposition के बाद noun या pronoun आता है
