1) What is a sentence?
A sentence is a group of words that gives a complete meaning.
Example:
- I am reading.
- She goes to school.
A sentence usually has:
- Subject = who/what does the action
- Verb = action or state
2) Types of Sentences by Structure
A. Simple Sentence
A simple sentence has one independent clause.
Formula:
Subject + Verb + Object/Complement
Examples:
- He plays cricket.
- I read books.
- The sun rises in the east.
- My brother is a doctor.
Hindi understanding:
- एक ही complete idea
- एक ही main clause
- कोई दूसरा clause नहीं
More examples:
- Riya sings beautifully.
- We visited Delhi.
- They are happy.
B. Compound Sentence
A compound sentence has two or more independent clauses joined by:
- FANBOYS: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So
or - a semicolon (;)
Formula:
Clause 1 + conjunction + Clause 2
Examples:
- I wanted to go, but it was raining.
- She studied hard, so she passed the exam.
- He likes tea, and I like coffee.
- It was late; we went home.
Hindi understanding:
- दो complete ideas
- दोनों parts अकेले भी sentence बन सकते हैं
- conjunction से जुड़ते हैं
More examples:
- Ravi is tired, yet he is working.
- You can sit here, or you can wait outside.
- I called him, but he did not answer.
C. Complex Sentence
A complex sentence has:
- one independent clause
- one or more dependent clauses
A dependent clause cannot stand alone.
Common subordinating conjunctions:
because, although, when, while, if, since, after, before, until, unless, though
Examples:
- I stayed home because it was raining.
- Although he was tired, he finished the work.
- When the bell rang, the students left the class.
- If you study hard, you will pass.
Hindi understanding:
- एक main clause
- एक extra clause जो अकेला complete नहीं होता
- meaning stronger and more detailed

- She smiled when she saw me.
- We went out after the rain stopped.
- He will help you if he has time.

4) How to identify the sentence type
Step 1: Find the clauses
Ask:
- Can this part stand alone as a sentence?
Step 2: Check the number of complete ideas
- One complete idea → Simple
- Two complete ideas → Compound
- One complete idea + extra dependent part → Complex
Quick test:
- He went home. → Simple
- He went home, and he slept. → Compound
- He went home because he was tired. → Complex
5) Punctuation with these sentences
A. Full Stop (.)
Used at the end of a sentence.
- She is my friend.
B. Comma (,)
Used:
- after introductory words/phrases
- before coordinating conjunctions in compound sentences
- to separate items in a list
Examples:
- After dinner, we went out.
- I was late, so I ran.
- I bought apples, oranges, and bananas.
C. Semicolon (;)
Used to join two closely related independent clauses.
- He is smart; he works hard.
D. Question Mark (?)
Used for questions.
- Where are you going?
E. Exclamation Mark (!)
Used for strong feelings.
- What a beautiful day!

Simple:
One idea
- I study.
Compound:
Two ideas joined
- I study, and I revise.
Complex:
Main idea + because/when/if etc.
- I study because I want good marks.

Beginner level

Intermediate level
- She runs every morning, and she feels healthy.
- I stayed inside because it was cold.
Advanced level
- Although the weather was bad, we continued our journey, and we reached safely.
- She finished her homework before the teacher asked for it, so she felt confident.
