I met a man as I went walking;

We got talking, Man and I.

“Where are you going to, Man?” I said.

(I said to the Man as he went by)

“Down to the village, to get some bread Will you come with me?”

“No, not I?” I met a horse as I went walking;

We got talking,

Horse and I.

“Where are you going to, Horse, today?”

(I said to the Horse as he went by)

“Down to the village to get some hay.

I met a woman as I went walking;

Will you come with me?” “No, not I.”

We got talking,

Woman and I.

“Where are you going to Woman, so early?”

(I said to the Woman as she went by)

“Down to the village to get some barley.

Will you come with me?” “No, not I.”

I met some Rabbits as I went walking;

We got talking,

Rabbits and I.

“Where are you going in your brown fur coats?” (I said to the Rabbits as they went by) 

“Down to the village to get some oats.

“Will you come with us?” “No, not I”.

I met a Puppy as I went walking;

We got talking,

Puppy and I.

“Where are you going this nice fine day?” (I said to the Puppy as he went by)

“Up in the hills to roll and play”.

“I’ll come with you Puppy”, said I.

Answer the following questions:

1.) Who does ‘I’ stand for in the title?

Answer: ‘I’ stands for the little boy in the title.

2.) Why does the child talk to everyone he meets on his way?

Answer: The boy wants to know where everyone was going so he talks to everyone he meets on his way.

3) Why does the child agree to go with the puppy?

Answer: The puppy said that it was going to roll and play so the child agreed to go with the puppy.

4.) Why does the child always say “No, not I”?

Answer: The child doesn’t want to go with anyone so he says no to them.

5.) List the names of all those who said, “Will you come with me/us?”.

Answer: The following is the list of the names of all those who said,” Will you come with me/us?”:

3.) A woman

4.) Some rabbits

6.) What is the question that the child asks everyone he meets?

Answer: The only one question that the child asks everyone he meets is –“Where are you going to?”
