Integration with Indian Knowledge System (भारतीय ज्ञान परंपरा से जुड़ाव)
- Family as the first school (परिवार ही पहली पाठशाला): In Indian tradition, the family is the first institution of learning. Values like respect for elders, helping each other, and sharing are taught in the family. Discuss these values.
- Joint family system: India traditionally has a joint family system where grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins live together. This is reflected in the sparrow family story where all relatives come to meet the babies.
- Animals in Indian stories: Indian folklore and Panchatantra stories often use animals and birds to teach moral values. The sparrow family story teaches about family bonds, love, and growing up.
- Respect for nature (प्रकृति का सम्मान): Sparrows are part of our environment. Emphasize the importance of protecting birds and their habitats. Make bird feeders to attract sparrows.
Note to the Teacher (शिक्षक के लिए नोट)
- Reinforce the names of family members in English. Explain that there can be various kinds of families (joint family, nuclear family, single-parent family, etc.). Be sensitive to different family structures.
- As the child names the bird, write it down on the board. Let the children be familiar with these birds. Later, a picture bird chart may be prepared as a group activity and displayed in the class.
- Encourage children to speak freely. Help them find words in English if they feel stuck. Guide them to speak good things about their family, the unique members of their family like dogs, cats, cows, goats, and so on. Instill the fact that we love our family.
- Draw attention of the children to the initial sound of each word (f and m sounds). Help them say the words aloud focusing on the initial sound.
- Provide regular and frequent practice of the phonics exercises and family vocabulary.
- Help children read the questions first. Later, they may write the words for the labeling activity.
- Support children’s attempts to read and speak. Even if a child answers in one word like ‘father’ instead of “This is my father.”, accept the answer and gradually encourage full sentences.
