Introduction
“My Name” (Pages 75-81) is the second chapter of Unit 4: Life Around Us in the Mridang Class 2 English textbook. This delightful story follows a little fly who wakes up one day and cannot remember his name!
The fly goes on a journey, asking different characters for help:
- An ant who lives on a tree
- The tree itself
- A cow sleeping in the shade
- The grass the cow eats
- A leaf fallen on the grass
Just as the leaf is about to answer, the wind blows and the leaf begins to fly. Seeing this, the fly remembers his name – “My name is Fly!”
The chapter emphasizes:

Integration with Indian Knowledge System (भारतीय ज्ञान परंपरा से जुड़ाव)
- Names in Indian Culture: In India, names have deep meaning. Many names come from Sanskrit and have spiritual significance. Names are often chosen based on:
- Deities (Ram, Krishna, Lakshmi)
- Nature (Ravi – sun, Chand – moon, Pushpa – flower)
- Qualities (Sachin – true, Anjali – offering)

- The Fly in Indian Folklore: Flies appear in many Indian folk tales. This story is similar to traditional Indian oral stories where animals go on journeys and learn about themselves.

Note to the Teacher (शिक्षक के लिए नोट)
- Ensure that each child answers the questions. Help children find the meanings of their names, as it is related to their identity.
- For Activity A (Listening), ensure that the children sit on a clean surface, quietly. Let them listen to sounds they hear; it can be of animals, birds, leaves, insects, breeze, vehicles or by people.
- For Activity B (Animal Sounds), say each phrase given above with action, for children to respond.
- Help children understand how to break any word into smaller parts (syllables) to pronounce it easily. Let them clap for each syllable. You may practise this regularly, each time with a new set of words.
- Ensure that children say the blends correctly. Provide regular exercise of the above blends.
- Encourage children to speak in English even if they use a mix of Hindi/English. Accept all responses and gradually encourage full sentences.
