Resources Needed (आवश्यक सामग्री)
- Textbook: Mridang Class 1 English
- Flashcards for greetings (Morning, Afternoon, Evening, Night, Namaste)
- Clock or time-of-day chart
- Flashcards for letters a–h with pictures
- Flashcards for action words (comb, eat, walk, etc.)
- Mirror for the “mirror activity”
- Worksheet for odd one out
- Notebooks and pencils for writing practice
Note to the Teacher (शिक्षक के लिए नोट)
- Ask the children how they greet others in their mother tongue. E.g., ‘Namaskar’, ‘Vanakkam’, ‘Sasriyakal’. Familiarise children with the phrases used for greetings in English.
- Read the sentences aloud for the children. Ensure that the children learn the action words such as—combing, eating, seeing, saying, hearing.
- Before doing the writing exercise, make letter flash cards to indicate directions when tracing the letters.
- Draw attention of the children to the initial sound of each word. Help them say the words aloud focusing on the initial sound.
- Provide regular and frequent practice of the odd-one-out and phonics exercises.
- Encourage role-play – children love pretending to be adults or teachers. Use this to make greetings practice more engaging.
Integration with Indian Knowledge System (भारतीय ज्ञान परंपरा से जुड़ाव)
- Highlight the Indian greeting “Namaste” (joining hands with a slight bow). Explain that it means “I bow to the divine in you” and is a respectful way to greet elders.
- Discuss how in different Indian states, greetings vary (Namaskar – Hindi, Vanakkam – Tamil, Namaskara – Kannada, Pranam – Bengali, etc.). This promotes the multilingualism approach recommended by NEP 2020.
