1. Full Stop / Period (.)
When to use:
- At the end of a complete sentence
- To show the sentence is finished
Examples:
- I go to school.
- She likes reading books.
- They are playing outside.
Hindi understanding:
- जब sentence पूरा हो जाए, तो (.) लगाते हैं
- इसे “पूर्ण विराम” कहते हैं
Advanced:
- Also used in abbreviations
- Mr. Singh (Mister)
- Dr. Sharma (Doctor)
- U.S.A. (United States of America)
2. Comma (,)
When to use:
A) In a list (items)
- I like apples**,** oranges**,** and bananas.
- We need a pen**,** notebook**,** and pencil.
- She visited Delhi**,** Mumbai**,** and Bangalore.
B) After introductory words/phrases
- After dinner, we went out.
- In the morning, I exercise.
- However, he was late.
- First, do your homework.
C) Before FANBOYS in compound sentences
- I wanted to go**,** but it was late.
- She studied hard**,** so she passed.
- We can stay**,** or we can leave.
D) Before and after extra information in a sentence
- My teacher**,** Mr. Sharma**,** is very kind.
- Delhi**,** the capital of India**,** is crowded.
- This book**,** which I bought yesterday**,** is interesting.
E) After direct address (when calling someone)
- Raj, can you help me?
- Mom, I’m going to school.
- Friends, please listen to me.
F) In dialogue/speech
- She said**,** “I will come tomorrow.”
- “Wait here**,” he said,** “I’ll be back soon.”
Examples:
- I bought milk**,** bread**,** cheese**,** and butter.
- Yesterday, I met my old friend.
- She is smart**,** yet she is humble.
Hindi understanding:
- जब list हो, तो (,) लगाते हैं
- Introductory phrase के बाद (,) लगता है
- Compound sentence में दूसरे clause से पहले (,) लगता है
Pro tip:
- “Oxford comma” = List में आखिरी item से पहले भी (,) लगाते हैं (अधिकतर अमेरिकी English में)
3. Semicolon (;)
When to use:
A) Join two closely related independent clauses
- He loves reading; his sister prefers sports.
- I was hungry; I ordered food.
- She passed the exam; she felt proud.
B) In complex lists (where commas already exist)
- I visited Delhi, India**;** Paris, France**;** and New York, USA.
- We need apples, oranges**;** milk, butter**;** and bread, eggs.
Examples:
- The weather was cold**;** we stayed inside.
- He worked hard**;** he achieved success.
Hindi understanding:
- Full stop (.) से कम stop है
- दोनों clauses बहुत closely related होनी चाहिए
- Pause बहुत ज़्यादा नहीं होता
Remember:
- After semicolon, new clause का first letter capital नहीं होता (usually)
- He is smart**;** he works hard. ✓
- He is smart**;** He works hard. ✗ (mostly wrong)
4. Colon (:)
When to use:
A) Before a list
- I need three things**:** a pen, a notebook, and a ruler.
- You must follow these rules**:** be on time, work hard, and be honest.
B) Before an explanation
- There is one reason**:** I want to study.
- He was angry**:** she forgot his birthday.
C) Before a quote
- He said**:** “I will help you.”
- The teacher asked**:** “What is 2 + 2?”
D) In time, ratio, titles
- Time**:** 3**:**30 PM
- Ratio**:** 2**:**5
- Title**:** Grammar Rules
Examples:
- I have a dream**:** to become a doctor.
- You need these subjects**:** English, Hindi, and Maths.
Hindi understanding:
- अगर list या explanation दे रहे हो, तो (:) लगाते हैं
- यह एक “pause” है जो अधिक information देने वाली हो
5. Question Mark (?)
When to use:
- At the end of a question
- Asking for information
Examples:
- What is your name?
- Where are you going?
- Do you like ice cream?
- Can I help you?
- Why are you sad?
Types of questions:
- Yes/No questions: Do you play cricket?
- Wh-questions: What is this?
- Indirect questions: I wonder if he will come. (No ? here)
Hindi understanding:
- जब सवाल पूछें, तो (?) लगाते हैं
- “प्रश्नवाचक चिह्न” कहलाता है
Important:
- Question के अंदर comma न लगाएं
- What is your name**?** ✓
- What is your name**,?** ✗
6. Exclamation Mark (!)
When to use:
- Show strong emotion, surprise, anger, joy
- Commands or orders
Examples:
- What a beautiful day!
- Be careful!
- I won the prize!
- Stop!
- How amazing!
Types:
- Surprise: Wow! I didn’t expect this!
- Joy: I love you!
- Anger: Don’t do that!
- Command: Listen to me!
Hindi understanding:
- जब कोई strong feeling हो
- “विस्मयादिबोधक चिह्न” कहलाता है
- कभी-कभी (!) ज़्यादा उपयोग करने से हल्का लगता है, formal नहीं
7. Apostrophe (‘)
When to use:
A) Possession (किसी की चीज़)
- This is Raj’s book.
- My mother’s car is white.
- The teacher’s desk is neat.
- John’s pen is blue.
B) Contractions (short forms)
- Do not → Don’t
- I am → I’m
- She is → She’s
- Will not → Won’t (special case)
- Cannot → Can’t
- Have not → Haven’t
C) Plural possession
- The boys’ room (बहुत सारे boys की room)
- The teachers’ office (बहुत सारे teachers का office)
Examples:
- It’s a beautiful day. (It is)
- That dog’s tail is long.
- They’re going to school. (They are)
Hindi understanding:
- possession दिखाने के लिए (‘s) लगाते हैं
- contraction के लिए apostrophe लगाते हैं
Common mistakes:
- ❌ Its a beautiful day. (गलत)
- ✅ It’s a beautiful day. (सही)
8. Quotation Marks (” “)
When to use:
A) Direct speech (direct बोल)
- She said, “I am happy.”
- He asked, “What time is it?”
B) Quotes or famous lines
- My favorite quote is “Work hard, dream big.”
C) Titles of short works
- I read the poem “The Road Not Taken.”
Format:
- “Direct speech,” he said.
- He said, “Direct speech.”
Examples:
- My friend said, “Let’s go to the park.”
- “Wait here,” she said, “I’ll return soon.”
Hindi understanding:
- Direct speech से पहले और बाद में quotation marks लगाते हैं
- Comma भी quotes के अंदर होता है
9. Dash (—) and Hyphen (-)
A) Dash (—) — longer line
- Used to add extra information in a sentence
- He is a teacher—very experienced one—in our school.
- I have one goal—to succeed.
B) Hyphen (-) — shorter line
- Used in compound words
- mother-in-law
- well-known
- twenty-one
10. Parentheses ( )
When to use:
- Extra information that is not so important
- My brother (who is a doctor) helps me.
- She loves reading (especially novels).
